Match Report

A stronger looking Blues team arrived some a bit late (tube delays) to avenge the defeat the last time at Hindhead and a time game was chosen.Blues skipper Aidan won the toss and elected to bat on a firm pitch on the basis the Blues tend to bat better when batting first.Opening with Steve Metson and Dan Williams 40 odd runs were put on before Dan was bowled for 16.Steve looked in good form and was joined by new recruit Gourav from India.Gourav sadly departed with the score on 53 having made 9.Steve then built a good partnership with Tom Ellen who batted carefully. They moved the score to 135 before Steve departed after a great knock having scored 67 with his usual supreme timing.Tom Rooke joined Tom Ellen and they frustrated Hindhead with good defence mixed with brutal assault. At 205 Tom Rooke departed after an excellent knock including a magnificent straight driven 6.Tom Ellen followed bowled as well after a very good 43.A flurry at the end by Aidan Liddell (15 not out) took the score to 234 for 6.A very good total against dangerous opponents.
After an excellent tea the Blues opened with newcomer Nick Luder and Quentin Macfarlane (making a welcome return down from Oxford Uni) Pace and enthusiasm (particularly from Nick Luder who provided much entertainment with his total commitment in the field and while bowling)held their openers in check. Both bowlers completed 5 overs for 19 and 13 runs respectively.Looking for a wicket Aidan turned to Gourav who bowled well and didnt disapoint taking the first wicket in a good spell of 6 overs 1 for 26.Richard Mullet returning to the team after a season of tennis bowled from the other end in an excellent spell taking 1 wicket also for only 15 runs in his 6 overs.
With time passing and 20 overs left it was time to turn to the big guns in the bowling department - the two Toms. With Tom Ellen bowling his left arm inswingers up the hill and Tom Rooke blasting down the slope at some pace, wickets began to fall steadily.
The key wicket was their captain Ed Armstrong, a South African of considerable ability with Bat and Ball.Fortunately Tom Ellen deceived him with only his second ball- a beautiful leg stump yorker to turn the match from potential draw to potential win.The two Toms cleaned up the rest of the wickets to finish with excellent figures of 9 overs 3 wickets for 12 runs(Ellen) and 8.2 overs 4 wickets for 11 runs(Rooke).A clinical performance from the Blues as Hindhead only managed 108 and the match was won convincingly with only 1 and a half overs left!
