Match Report

Blues scraped together a side of 9 with the help of Jeremy Lascelles to play a virtual league side of young confident players from Shooters Hill.Aidan lost the toss and was happy enough to field on a green soft pitch.Playing 35 overs due to both sides being short of players kept it interesting.Their openers put on 50 before Guy freeman broke through to get the first wicket.Alex Beales was pressed into opening at the other end based on his speed and after a useful spell was replaced by Aidan. Guy got a second wicket also caught by stand in keeper Matt Fitzgerald doing an excellent job! Aidan got the third wicket thanks to an excellent diving one handed catch by Jeremy (showing surprising mobility for his years!).Things were looking better but they kept the score moving quickly punishing all loose deliveries.Their No.4 put on a useful 53 before Matt Rolfe (who replaced Guy) induced a good caught and bowled.Aidan managed to bowl the next two batsmen and Matt Rolfe picked up a second wicket courtesy of another Fitz catch.Aidan picked up his fourth wicket as Alex Beales caught a good catch in the deep.Tom Lascelles polished off their last two batsmen in a promising spell but they had amassed a useful 224 off only 31 overs! Their cause was helped by the return from holiday early of their star player who arrived in time to bat no.11 and score a quickfire 24.This meant we were effectively 9 vs 11.(We had a very young sub who found the going a bit tough)-Bowling: Guy Freeman 7 overs 2 wickets for 39 runs,Aex Beales 5 overs none for 29,Aidan 9 overs 4 wickets for 52 runs,Matt Rolfe 5 overs 2 wickets for 32 runs,Max White 4 overs none for 35 runs,Tom Lascelles 2 overs 2 wickets for 13 runs.
The feeling was this was a getable total and Guy Freeman and Matt Rolfe made a good start particularly Guy at his belligerant best scoring a quickfire 53.Matt Rolfe also got an excellent 50 but once Guy was out the scoring rate slowed as their accurate quick bowlers began to turn the screw.Jeremy and son Tom batted on against some good fast bowling on a lively pitch, Jeremy top scoring with a battling 58.Son Tom ended not out on 19 and Matt Fitzgerald was out for 5 when it was too late. The Blues came close, ending their 35 overs only 10 short! The fact that the opposition were able to field 11 fit (mostly) younger players helped but the Blues very nearly upset the odds in a competitive match.
